NEW YORK (AP) — Chauncey Billups, former NBA star and head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, is set to appear in a New York court facing serious charges related to his alleged involvement in illegal poker games rigged by organized crime figures.
Billups, a five-time All-Star and NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons, is facing charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. His attorney has expressed strong confidence in his client's innocence, stating that Billups would not jeopardize his Hall of Fame legacy for any poker game.
Earlier this month, more than 30 individuals were charged in what prosecutors described as a “federal takedown” of illegal gambling operations associated with professional sports, with Billups being one of the highest-profile names in connection with the case.
Prosecutors allege that Billups was involved in a scheme that defrauded victims of approximately $7 million, leveraging his celebrity status to attract unsuspecting wealthy players to these rigged games in locations like Manhattan, Las Vegas, Miami, and the Hamptons.
