SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a $30 million payment to the family of a 16-year-old youth killed by police in one of the largest such settlements in the U.S. This settlement surpasses the $27 million paid to George Floyd's family in the aftermath of his murder by a police officer in May 2020, an incident that ignited significant nationwide protests and discussions regarding systemic racism in law enforcement.
Surveillance and body-worn camera footage from January 28 revealed Konoa Wilson fleeing from gunfire when he encountered Officer Daniel Gold at a downtown train station. As he attempted to exit the station, Wilson was shot by Gold, who allegedly fired two shots with no warning, fatally wounding the teenager. The family's lawsuit describes Wilson as Black, calling into question the officer's actions during the encounter.
During the council meeting, Council member Henry Foster expressed his emotional distress over the incident, sharing his fears for his own son amid ongoing violence against Black youth. Kanoa’s life was taken while fleeing from gunshots, and he found himself running into the arms of a police officer. This should not have happened, Foster stated, further highlighting the need for accountability and progress since George Floyd's death.
Meanwhile, Lt. Cesar Jimenez, a spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department, confirmed that Officer Gold is currently on administrative assignment as investigations into the incident continue.}
