NEW YORK (AP) — Zohran Mamdani wasted no time as the mayor-elect of New York City in asserting his position against the threats posed by former President Trump, who had previously warned of defunding the city and even arresting him.
At his victory celebration in Brooklyn, Mamdani, a Democrat, openly addressed Trump, stating, “Turn the volume up,” and emphasizing that only New York—a city that exemplifies resistance—can demonstrate how to defeat the former President.
Mamdani, who immigrated from Uganda to the U.S. where he gained citizenship after college, declared, “New York will remain a city of immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.” His words were a direct challenge to the notion of divisive politics, particularly in the face of Trump's presidency.
Trump appeared to be attentive, posting on social media comments indicating his displeasure with Mamdani’s remarks.
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, pledged to uphold progressive values, in stark contrast to Trump's hardline policies. He is poised to face continuous political attacks, especially considering the current administration's history of opposition to progressive agendas.
