Tragic Loss: Body of Fourth Missing US Soldier Recovered in Lithuania
A week-long search ends with the discovery of the last soldier involved in a military accident during drills.
The body of a fourth U.S. soldier has been recovered in Lithuania, concluding a week-long search for the soldiers who went missing during a military exercise. The team, consisting of four soldiers, was participating in operations with an M88A2 Hercules armored vehicle when they disappeared near Pabrade. Prior to this discovery, rescuers had already located the bodies of the other three soldiers, which were subsequently found submerged in a peat bog.
The search operation, which garnered significant international attention, involved hundreds of personnel from the U.S. Army and Navy, as well as support from the Lithuanian, Polish, and Estonian Armed Forces. Major General Christopher Norrie, representing U.S. Army Europe and Africa, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, stating, "This past week has been devastating. Today our hearts bear the weight of an unbearable pain... the world is darker without them.”
Lieutenant General Charles Costanza termed the event a "tragic accident," recognizing the collaborative efforts of diverse recovery teams working tirelessly on the ground to retrieve the submerged vehicle. While the recovery operation saw the use of additional M88A2 units and bulldozers to extricate the sunken vehicle, the reasons behind the accident remain under investigation by the U.S. Army.
The identities of the deceased soldiers have not been disclosed. All four soldiers had been engaged in Operation Atlantic Resolve, a military mission responding to the ongoing situation in Ukraine, which may highlight the broader geopolitical context of military exercises in Eastern Europe. The incident underscores the risks associated with military training, especially in challenging environments, and stands as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by service members abroad.
