Germany Struggles to Attract Military Recruits Amid Historical Concerns

In a small town near Rüthen, Germany, a rain-soaked morning in late May set the stage for an unusual mix of childhood thrills and military aspirations. Parents watched as their children maneuvered go-karts around a slalom track, all while German Army recruiters stood by, eager to spark interest in future enlistment. However, the atmosphere was somewhat tense, with many parents openly expressing their disapproval. “I think it’s terrible that they advertise to kids,” said local civil servant Manuel Fleigner. “No one wants their children in the army.”

Germany's reluctance towards military service is deeply rooted in its history, particularly stemming from the consequences of World War II.
