Brazilian authorities intervened to prevent a bomb attack that was reportedly aimed at Lady Gaga’s concert held on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, in conjunction with the justice ministry, disclosed that suspects had recruited individuals to execute attacks using makeshift explosives, with the intent of gaining notoriety on social media platforms.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the plot, including the alleged mastermind who was apprehended for illegal firearm possession in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul and a teenager who faced charges related to child pornography in Rio de Janeiro. Investigators revealed that the planning group had propagated hate speech, particularly targeting children, adolescents, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

The justice ministry noted that those involved identified themselves as fans of Lady Gaga, colloquially referred to as "Little Monsters." Authorities acted swiftly, enacting "Operation Fake Monster" after receiving intelligence tips that uncovered online networks advocating violence among teenagers utilizing coded language and extremist symbolism. Search warrants were executed across several states, including Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and Sao Paulo, resulting in the confiscation of electronic devices and related materials.

The concert, which was funded by the city to invigorate Rio’s struggling economy, drew an impressive crowd, with estimates indicating over two million attendees. Anticipations suggested the event could generate upwards of $100 million (£75 million) in economic benefits. Given the scale of the gathering, a comprehensive security plan was implemented, deploying 5,000 police officers who enforced strict entry procedures which included metal detectors, drones, and facial recognition systems to ensure attendee safety.
