Donatella Versace Announces Departure as Creative Director of Versace

Donatella Versace concludes her impactful 30-year tenure at the helm of the iconic fashion house, paving the way for a new era.

Versace's legacy transitions as Donatella steps aside, leaving a profound imprint on the fashion industry and welcoming Dario Vitale as the new leader.

In a significant shift within the fashion world, Donatella Versace has announced her step down as the creative director of Versace, a position she has held for nearly three decades. Following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni Versace in 1997, Donatella took up the mantle, guiding the brand through numerous fashion seasons and campaigns. The announcement comes immediately prior to Dario Vitale taking over as creative director. Vitale, who previously served as the design director for Miu Miu, has been credited as a strong design leader, and his appointment is viewed as part of a thoughtful succession strategy according to the current owners, Capri Holdings.

In a statement released by Capri Holdings, it was revealed that Donatella will transition to a role focused on philanthropy and brand advocacy, allowing her to still play a significant role in the Versace community. The company extended gratitude to her for her immense contributions, stating she has been integral to the brand's success globally. In a heartfelt message shared with her 12 million Instagram followers, Donatella expressed that being part of Versace has been "the greatest honour of [her] life" and emphasized her desire to see the brand flourish through the vision of the next generation, embodied by Vitale.

Throughout her illustrious career, Donatella has dressed high-profile celebrities such as Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, solidifying her status as a fashion icon. She is renowned for her bold designs, including Jennifer Lopez's iconic jungle dress and Michelle Obama's striking attire for her final state dinner. Under her leadership, Versace became synonymous with vibrant prints and opulence, reflecting her personal flair.

Originally founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella and her brothers Santo and Gianni, the Versace label was acquired by Michael Kors in 2018 before ultimately becoming part of Capri Holdings. The fashion house is projected to contribute significantly to Capri's revenue for 2024, illustrating its sustained influence in the global fashion industry. As the brand embarks on this new chapter, the impact of Donatella’s legacy will undoubtedly shape its future trajectory.
