Pope Leo XIV Urges Global Leaders to Pursue Peace in First Sunday Address

In his inaugural Sunday blessing, Pope Leo XIV echoes calls for peace in Ukraine and Gaza, urging leaders to end conflict.

In a powerful first message delivered from St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV calls on world leaders to prioritize peace and reflect on past conflicts.

Pope Leo XIV addressed the masses on Sunday from the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square, delivering a poignant message during his first public blessing as pontiff. His appeal for peace resonated strongly, particularly his declaration: “Never again war.” This proclamation was met with enthusiasm from the gathered crowd, as he urged influential global leaders to take necessary steps towards conflict resolution.

Reflecting on the nearly 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II, the pope reaffirmed his predecessor Pope Francis's observations regarding ongoing violence, describing it as “a third world war in pieces.” Leo particularly called for an immediate and sustainable peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the critical need for the safe return of children separated from their families amidst the war, indirectly referencing the reported abduction of Ukrainian children to Russia.

In addition to addressing the situation in Ukraine, Pope Leo XIV made a heartfelt plea for renewed peace efforts in Gaza, advocating for a cease-fire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid to support civilian populations. He further stressed the importance of ensuring that hostages taken amid recent conflicts are safely returned, particularly referencing the events surrounding the assault launched by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Alongside pressing global issues, the Pope took the opportunity to honor mothers as the world observed Mother's Day in several countries, a gesture that further reinforced his message of compassion and familial care.

Pope Leo XIV also acknowledged the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, calling upon the faithful to consider roles in the priesthood amidst declining numbers in religious vocations worldwide. He expressed that the Church has a “great need” for more clergy.

Among the attendees, Candice Dias from California expressed her impression of the new pontiff, noting his humility and approachability during the address. The Pope, who had quickly engaged in activities since his election, had conducted his first Mass shortly after taking office and articulated a vision of aligning the Church’s mission with the needs of everyday people.

As preparations were made for the reopening of the Sistine Chapel, previously closed for the conclave, attendees like Dias looked forward to continued engagement with the Vatican's rich spiritual and cultural heritage. Overall, Pope Leo XIV's opening message as pontiff sets the tone for his commitment to fostering peace and compassion through his leadership.
