In the heart of Kyiv, the atmosphere around a memorial honoring fallen Ukrainian soldiers turned somber as people gathered to remember those lost in the ongoing war against Russia. On a recent day, Nataliia Klymyuk, a volunteer who has dedicated over a decade to maintaining this memorial, reflected on her long-held skepticism about U.S. President Donald Trump's political stance.

The discontent among Ukrainians surged after Trump's remarks from his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, wherein he placed blame on Ukraine for the war's inception. "You should have never started it," he claimed, concerning Ukrainian leaders. This assertion drew ire and disbelief among those present at the memorial, many of whom have experienced direct losses in the conflict.

Klymyuk, standing among flags representing thousands of soldiers killed in the invasion, expressed her shattered trust in the U.S. leadership, stating, “Trump has always been a friend to Putin.” She lamented that any perceived support from Trump was likely driven by self-interest rather than genuine concern for Ukraine's plight.

The pain was palpable as individuals like Marina Ivashyna shared their personal struggles. Affected deeply by the conflict, Ivashyna lost her father in the war and currently faces uncertainty regarding her husband, who is missing in action. Tearfully, she conveyed her lack of faith in any positive resolution stemming from the current geopolitical turmoil, saying, “I don’t believe in these negotiations.”
