The Motown legend categorically denies the accusations, asserting that the lawsuit is an attempt to extort money from him.
Motown icon Smokey Robinson is currently embroiled in a legal battle as he responds to allegations of sexual assault made by four former employees. A lawsuit filed on Tuesday by the plaintiffs, who have chosen to remain anonymous and are referred to as Jane Doe 1, 2, 3, and 4, accuses the famed singer-songwriter of sexual battery including rape, as well as false imprisonment and other labor violations.
Robinson's attorney, Christopher Frost, labeled the allegations as "vile" and "false," asserting that they represent a desperate attempt to extract $50 million from an individual who has made significant contributions to the music industry over several decades. Frost expressed confidence that as the case unfolds, the evidence will underscore the baselessness of the claims.
The lawsuit provides a detailed account of several alleged incidents dating back to 2006, where the plaintiffs claim they were coerced into sexual acts while employed as housekeepers for Robinson. According to their statements, they refrained from coming forward earlier due to fears of retaliation, job loss, or potential impacts on their immigration status.
In addition to Robinson, his second wife, Frances, is also named in the lawsuit, accused of creating a hostile work environment and failing to intervene in her husband's alleged misconduct. The plaintiffs, all of Hispanic descent, seek a civil jury trial and significant monetary damages, although no criminal charges or police reports have been filed against Robinson.
During a recent press conference, the attorneys representing the accusers characterized Robinson as a "serial and sick rapist," insisting that his behavior needs to be addressed. This statement drew criticism from Robinson's legal counsel, who described the press briefing as a manipulative attempt to gather public support for their case.
Frost maintained that the legal team will seek a dismissal of the lawsuit and that Robinson will respond publicly to the allegations in due time. As the case develops, both sides are urging the public and media to reserve judgment until all evidence is presented.
