Indian Politician Baba Siddique Assassinated in Mumbai
The motives behind Siddique's assassination during a high-security festival remain unclear.
Indian politician Baba Siddique was tragically shot dead in Mumbai on Tuesday. The 66-year-old politician was assassinated near his son's office, who also serves as a political figure. It has been reported that two individuals have been apprehended in connection to the murder. Siddique held prominence in Maharashtra’s political sphere and had recently switched allegiance from the Congress party to the National Congress Party (NCP), involved in the governing coalition with the BJP. Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's deputy chief minister and member of the NCP, expressed shock at the attack, denouncing it as “cowardly”. Siddique was well-regarded for his opulent gatherings and connections with Bollywood luminaries. Despite heightened security due to a significant Hindu festival, this incident has prompted criticism from opposition parties regarding a potential security breach. Authorities have assured a comprehensive investigation. Although two suspects are in custody, their motives are unknown. Reports suggest potential links to a gang led by infamous criminal Lawrence Bishnoi, currently imprisoned for multiple high-profile crimes, including the memorable 2022 killing of Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala. Incidentally, Siddique's security had been recently increased following credible death threats.
