New Deepwater Fish Species Named after Iconic Animated Warrior Princess

A recent discovery in deep-sea marine biology has unveiled a new species of fish named after the character San from the legendary animated film Princess Mononoke.

Researchers in China have identified Branchiostegus sanae, a deepwater tilefish with distinctive cheek markings resembling those of San, the warrior princess raised by wolves. This discovery underscores the ongoing exploration of biodiversity in the ocean's depths, an area still largely uncharted and rich in unique species.

The addition of this fish to the Branchiostegidae family highlights both the unique ecological traits of deepwater environments and the fusion of popular culture with scientific discovery. The deepwater tilefish, commonly found in East and Southeast Asian seafood markets, faced a notable evolution in recognition with only 31 species in the family described so far.

Haochen Huang, the study's lead author, notes that naming the fish after San serves to promote the film's message of harmony between humans and nature. The study was conducted by a collaborative team from several Chinese institutions using genetic analysis to confirm the species' uniqueness. With only three new species identified in this genus over the last 34 years, the discovery of Branchiostegus sanae is a significant scientific achievement.

Research specimens will be housed in marine biological collections to expand the knowledge available on this newly classified species, supporting continued exploration and appreciation of the deep-sea biodiversity.
