WikiPortraits Initiative Aims to Transform Wikipedia's Celebrity Images

A volunteer-driven project seeks to enhance Wikipedia's collection of celebrity photographs, addressing long-standing quality issues.

The WikiPortraits initiative aims to recruit volunteer photographers worldwide to capture quality images for Wikipedia, countering the site's notoriously poor celebrity photos. Launched in early 2024, the project currently includes over 55 photographers and has already made notable improvements, showcasing its potential to revolutionize how personalities are represented in the digital encyclopaedia.

Wikipedia, known for its vast repository of knowledge, struggles with a persistent issue: inadequate images for many notable figures, particularly celebrities. This has sparked the creation of WikiPortraits, a volunteer-led initiative aiming to improve the quality of these images. Founded by Kevin Payravi and Jennifer Lee, the project recruits amateur photographers globally, securing them accreditation to attend significant events like film festivals and other major gatherings.

As Wikipedia is largely volunteer-supported and lacks the budget for professional photography, many images currently housed on the site are outdated or subpar. "Some people are super bothered by the terrible photos on Wikipedia," said Lee, who is actively participating in events to collect better visuals. The initiative strives to combat this by providing fresh and high-quality images that can enhance the user experience on the platform.

A notable example illustrating this issue is the case of comedian Emil Wakim, whose previous Wikipedia image was so poorly received that it garnered comments suggesting a placeholder would be more suitable. Similarly, the untimely photographs of sports figures like footballer Kyle Bartley have become subjects of social media anecdotes highlighting Wikipedia's shortcomings.

Launched in early 2024, WikiPortraits currently showcases the work of 55 volunteer photographers. Many participants are not only fans of the online platform but also photography enthusiasts eager to expand their portfolios. Bryan Berlin, a participating photographer from New York and a high school teacher, emphasizes the motivation behind their work, explaining, "Having a better photo of someone gives better information for somebody who is accessing Wikipedia."

The impact of the project is significant, with photographs reportedly receiving around 100 million views monthly. Noteworthy updates have included new images for celebrated individuals such as Florence Pugh and Nobel Prize winner John Jumper, who expressed gratitude for the fresh representation.

As WikiPortraits continues to grow, it hopes to attract photographers worldwide, enhancing global representation on Wikipedia. While plans for video content remain absent, the project's ambition includes acquiring credentials for prestigious events like the Met Gala and the Oscars, highlighting its commitment to improving the quality of visual portrayals of influential figures on one of the internet's most frequented platforms.
