**Explosion Rocks Central Athens Amidst Ongoing Tensions**

A blast near Hellenic Train offices raises alarm, highlighting social unrest following a railway disaster.

A recent explosion in central Athens has drawn attention after anonymous warnings were made prior to the incident. Positioned near the offices of Hellenic Train, the blast was triggered by a device found in a backpack, with no injuries reported. Greek authorities label the incident as a condemnable act, insignificant damage although exacerbating societal tensions tied to past railway tragedies.

A significant explosion occurred in central Athens, specifically close to the Hellenic Train offices, after an anonymous call was made to local media outlets warning of the upcoming attack. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage revealed that the explosion was linked to a backpack left outside the office building on Friday. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities or injuries, although the incident has raised serious alarm in an already tense environment.

Transport Minister Christos Staikouras characterized the explosion as a “criminal act” that jeopardized safety for both employees of Hellenic Train and pedestrians in a busy area. Local news outlets that received the warning prior to the explosion – including Efsyn and Zougla – reported that the explosive device was seemingly secured within a padlocked backpack placed on a scooter without license plates. A bomb disposal unit arrived on the scene but was unable to neutralize the threat in time.

Minister Staikouras reinforced the urgency of addressing the growing violence, stating, "Nothing justifies terrorism; no act of violence brings justice," indicating the need for strict legal measures in response to such incidents. The explosion also comes at a time of heightened public unrest over a devastating railway incident from February 2023, where a deadly collision sadly resulted in the deaths of 57 individuals, many of whom were young students.

The Greek populace has expressed their grief and outrage through numerous protests, most notably marking the second anniversary of the train disaster earlier this year. Some of these demonstrations turned violent, with clashes reported between protesters and police. The ongoing societal tensions, compounded by the memory of the railway tragedy, have contributed to an increasingly volatile atmosphere.

Hellenic Train has responded to the explosion, emphasizing its condemnation of violence and the importance of a calmer, more constructive political climate to foster dialogue and progress. The inquiry into the train crash, determined that human error and systemic failures contributed to the disaster, but the date for a trial addressing these issues remains undisclosed. The people of Greece continue to seek accountability and justice in a time marked by frustration and uncertainty.
