Health Experts Warn of Risks Associated with Misuse of Menstrual Cups

Doctors caution women about potential health issues from improperly used menstrual cups, including kidney problems and discomfort.

A recent case of kidney issues linked to a misaligned menstrual cup highlights the importance of correct usage and proper sizing. Health professionals urge attention to ensure safe and effective use of menstrual products.

Doctors are emphasizing the need for caution among women using menstrual cups after a recent incident in which a user developed temporary kidney issues due to improper placement of the device. The case, reported in the British Medical Journal, involved a woman in her 30s who had been suffering from intermittent pelvic pain and blood in her urine for several months without realizing the connection to her menstrual cup—a reusable device designed to collect menstrual blood.

Menstrual cups, made from soft and flexible silicone or rubber, can hold approximately 20 to 30ml of blood. When correctly positioned, they offer a sustainable alternative to traditional sanitary products. However, medical experts warn about the potential consequences of using a cup that is not the correct size or is misaligned, as it may press against the ureters—tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

Although the occurrence of such complications is considered extremely rare, doctors are urging women to pay close attention to product instructions and to select the right size and shape for their individual anatomy. They stressed that menstrual cups can be legally purchased without consultation from healthcare professionals, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive patient information regarding their use.

A study involving 530 young individuals highlighted the challenges associated with first-time use, as many reported difficulty in removing the cup and some even sought assistance. Experts suggest that users should avoid pulling on the stem when detaching the cup; instead, they should squeeze the base to break the suction seal. Physiotherapist Dr. Kate Lough remarked that with practice, users typically become comfortable using cups, which should not cause pain when positioned correctly.

Women may also explore various models available for purchase, as options here can significantly impact comfort and efficacy. For instance, smaller-sized cups are available for those who have not given birth, making them accessible for all women, including virgins. Furthermore, if there are concerns about potential complications—such as displacement of a contraceptive coil—the advice is to use additional contraception and seek professional guidance.

In comparison, menstrual discs serve a similar purpose but are designed to sit higher in the vaginal canal. Both products are a step towards greater menstrual health awareness, but expert advice stresses the importance of proper utilization to avoid adverse effects like bladder issues or even pelvic organ prolapse.
