Do Kwon's Extradition to US Finalized Following Crypto Scandal
South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur Do Kwon is set to be extradited to the United States from Montenegro, facing allegations related to the collapse of TerraUSD and Luna tokens that resulted in significant financial losses for investors.
Do Kwon, the South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur embroiled in controversy over the collapse of TerraUSD and Luna tokens, will be extradited to the United States from Montenegro. This decision follows an extensive legal process, as both the US and South Korea sought his extradition, alleging he orchestrated fraud that led to a loss of approximately $40 billion for investors, significantly impacting the global cryptocurrency market.
Despite Montenegro lacking extradition treaties with the US or South Korea, the courts have reached a resolution after 18 months of varying rulings. The Minister of Justice, Bojan Bozovic, announced the approval of the extradition, asserting that most legal criteria were met to favor the request from US authorities. The Ministry's statement confirmed that Kwon agreed to be extradited to both countries.
Earlier this year, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Kwon and Terraform Labs with orchestrating a multi-billion dollar securities fraud. SEC chairman Gary Gensler stated that Kwon and his company failed to provide transparent information concerning their crypto assets, particularly regarding the value of Luna and the purported stability of TerraUSD. Allegations indicate that Kwon misled investors, promising substantial returns amid a wave of investments.
The aftermath of the tokens' failure in May 2022 triggered a drastic downturn in the cryptocurrency market, causing a ripple effect that affected major currencies, including Bitcoin. Following the incident, an Interpol "red notice" was issued for Kwon, who, prior to his arrest, was located in Singapore and later fled to Serbia before being apprehended in Montenegro.
Kwon was arrested in March 2023 at Podgorica Airport while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. Additionally, he was sentenced to four months in a Montenegrin prison for forging official documents. Other individuals from Terraform Labs have also faced legal consequences, such as Hon Chang-joon, who was extradited to South Korea after a brief incarceration in Montenegro for fraud. The unfolding events represent a significant chapter in the cryptocurrency sector’s ongoing regulatory and ethical challenges.
