**Escalation in West Bank Violence: Palestinian Militants Target Israeli Soldiers Amid UN Concerns**

Tensions rise as a Palestinian gunman kills Israeli soldiers, prompting military escalation and UN warnings about worsening conditions in the region.

A Palestinian gunman’s attack on Israeli soldiers in the West Bank underscores the intensifying conflict, with both sides sustaining heavy casualties and international calls for de-escalation growing louder.

In a significant escalation of violence, two Israeli soldiers were killed, and eight others wounded in a shooting attack in Tayasir, located in the occupied West Bank. The assault occurred as the Israeli military continues extensive operations targeting Palestinian armed groups in northern regions of the West Bank, leading to heightened tensions and loss of life on both sides. The gunman was killed at the scene, further intensifying the cycle of violence.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad commended the attack as retaliation against ongoing Israeli military actions in Tubas, Jenin, and Tulkarm, although they did not claim responsibility. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that roughly 70 Palestinians have been killed since January, primarily in operations linked to counterterrorism efforts.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the intensified military campaign three days after a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict, highlighting a push to “defeat terrorism” in the region. The Palestinian health ministry states that significant casualties among Palestinians have resulted from recent operations, raising alarms about the humanitarian situation.

UN officials have expressed serious concerns regarding the deteriorating conditions in Jenin's refugee camp, predicting a "catastrophic direction" as Israeli forces have reportedly engaged in extensive demolitions and raids. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) voiced criticism of the operation, indicating that around 100 houses were either destroyed or heavily damaged, impacting civilians, including children.

IDF's Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, acknowledged the need for a review of the incident and pledged to enhance counterterrorism measures across the West Bank. In a statement, the IDF confirmed they dismantled structures believed to house military resources for armed groups, emphasizing their commitment to combating perceived threats.

Amid the escalating violence, a backdrop of criticism against Israeli policies has emerged, with allegations of ethnic cleansing being directed at operations in Palestinian territories. Meanwhile, the strained relationship between the Israeli government and UNRWA complicates aid deliveries and relief efforts in vulnerable areas.

Since the onset of hostilities following Hamas's October attack, violence in the West Bank has surged, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation. The international community continues to call for restraint and dialogue as both Israelis and Palestinians grapple with the impact of the ongoing conflict.
