Grandmas Making Waves: Singapore's Ah Ma Flippa Ball Team

The Ah Ma Flippa Ball team exemplifies Singapore's efforts to actively engage its senior population in sports and social activities.

In Singapore, the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team, consisting of grandmothers aged 60 to 80, showcases how the nation promotes active aging through participation in modified sports. This initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to enhance the quality of life for its growing elderly population.

In Singapore, a unique sports initiative is helping redefine aging, led by the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team, where "Ah Ma" translates to grandmother in several Chinese dialects. This eclectic group of women, mainly in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, plays a modified version of water polo, enjoying both the physical activity and social engagement that comes with their participation.

Founded in 2016, the team emerged after a sports official at a local swimming complex observed coach Ting Kum Luen's success with children's flippa ball classes and proposed the idea for older adults. Initially met with skepticism, expectations shifted as these grandmothers donned their swimsuits and dove into the game with enthusiasm, competing energetically for the ball. Last month, during a raucous practice, one player humorously demanded the coach blow the whistle, insisting, “You all are playing rugby!”

In a nation where life expectancy has reached 84 years, and nearly a fifth of the population is now over 65, Singapore’s approach prioritizes healthy aging. The government has raised both the official retirement age and the re-employment age, ensuring older citizens can work longer if they choose. Additionally, creative initiatives such as cash payouts, social visits from “Silver Generation Ambassadors,” and organized activities range from robotics to e-sports, all aim to help seniors maintain an active, fulfilling lifestyle.

The Ah Ma Flippa Ball team is not just about sports; it’s a reflection of Singapore's broader cultural shift toward valuing the contributions and well-being of older citizens. As the team continues to grow, it symbolizes the vibrant spirit of its members and the important role of community in fostering resilience among the elderly. With further support, these grandmothers aren’t just playing; they're rewriting the narrative of aging in the modern world, proving that an active, joyful life can extend well into the later years.
