Unexpected Visitor: Cargo Ship Crashes into Norwegian Garden
A container ship stranded in the garden of a Byneset resident has sparked investigations, with no injuries reported.
A curious event unfolded in Byneset, Norway, as a local man named Johan Helberg awoke early Thursday to discover a massive cargo ship lodged in his front garden. The 135-meter-long vessel, identified as the NCL Salten, came aground just meters away from his home around 5:00 AM local time, prompting both surprise and concern in the neighborhood.
The unexpected intrusion was first brought to Mr. Helberg's attention by his neighbour, Jostein Jorgensen, who was alarmed by the ship's approach. “I could hear the ship coming in at full speed,” Jorgensen recounted, adding that he rushed to Helberg’s home when he noticed there was no sign of life. After multiple attempts to ring the doorbell, it was only through a phone call that he managed to alert Mr. Helberg about the looming maritime crisis.
In an interview with TV2, Helberg expressed his disbelief: “I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal,” he shared, reflecting on the occurrence which he described as having a “very bulky new neighbour,” suggesting that while the situation was unwelcome, he remained light-hearted about the unexpected arrival.
The NCL Salten, flagged in Cyprus, was en route through the scenic Trondheim Fjord toward Orkanger when it mysteriously veered off course. Fortunately, the 16 crew members aboard were unharmed, and although the exact cause of the incident remains undetermined, Norwegian police have initiated an investigation. Notably, the ship had a prior episode of running aground earlier in 2023, albeit managing to free itself without external assistance.
The unusual sight of a ship resting in a garden certainly leaves a lasting impression on the small community, showcasing not just the unpredictability of maritime navigation but also the resilience of its residents in handling unforeseen circumstances.
