The cast of the iconic sitcom Cheers remembers George Wendt, who portrayed Norm Peterson for 11 seasons, following his passing at the age of 76.


George Wendt, known for his role as Norm Peterson on Cheers, passed away peacefully at 76, prompting heartfelt tributes from co-stars. Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer expressed their sadness, remembering Wendt as a cherished friend. Wendt's memorable character left a lasting legacy of laughter and camaraderie.


George Wendt, famed actor renowned for his role as Norm Peterson on the beloved sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76, stirring a wave of tributes from his former co-stars. Ted Danson, who portrayed bar owner Sam Malone, expressed his sorrow, stating, "I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us." Kelsey Grammer, known for his role as Frasier Crane, reflected on the loss, saying, "Mourning is a private matter. But I liked George a lot. He was beloved by millions."

Wendt's exemplary performance as Norm spanned all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993. His work earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. According to his family, Wendt passed away peacefully in his sleep at home early Tuesday morning.

"He was a doting family man, a well-loved friend, and confidant to all those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever," stated a representative. Danson extended condolences to Wendt's family, adding, "It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie."

Co-star Rhea Perlman described Wendt as "the sweetest, kindest man I ever met" and mentioned how profoundly she would miss him. John Ratzenberger expressed his heartbreak over the news and cherished the moments they shared on stage. Melissa Joan Hart, who collaborated with Wendt on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, remembered him as "warm, professional, and kind" and emphasized the joy he brought to the cast and crew.

Beyond Cheers, Wendt appeared in movies like Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho and was featured in Michael Jackson's 1991 music video for "Black or White." Married to fellow actor Bernadette Birkett since 1978, he had three children and was the uncle to actor Jason Sudeikis, famed for his role in Ted Lasso.

Wendt's character Norm became a household name, and his iconic entrance was a well-loved gag on the show. Reflecting on the series' massive success two decades after it ended, Wendt noted how recognizable he remained due to the show's impact.

Cheers Boston, the pub that inspired the show, paid tribute to Wendt by showcasing a photo of Norm's seat at the bar. They commemorated his legacy, stating, "George wasn't just an actor; he was a symbol of comfort, laughter, and the familiar feeling of walking into a place where everybody knows your name. To George: thank you for the laughs, the memories, and the legacy you leave behind. You'll always have a stool at our bar."
