As the last remaining top-level predator in its river habitat, the porpoise's health is considered a key indicator of the entire environment's wellbeing.
In an effort to protect the endangered species, a comprehensive fishing ban has been enforced along the Yangtze River and its surrounding areas—an initiative conceived by Professor Cao Wenxuan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2006.
