Bulgarian Woman Resists Spy Allegations Amid Ongoing Trial in UK

Katrin Ivanova, a Bulgarian woman in the UK, refutes charges of espionage for Russia, asserting her ignorance of alleged spy activities.

During a trial concerning alleged espionage for Russia, Katrin Ivanova distanced herself from claims of espionage, arguing that she believed her activities were journalistic in nature. She also expressed disbelief at her partner's alleged betrayal and the circumstances surrounding their involvement in the case.

Katrin Ivanova, a 33-year-old Bulgarian woman residing in the UK, has vehemently denied charges of conspiracy to spy for Russia, asserting in court that she was unaware that the information she gathered would be sent to Russian authorities. The case, which involves a broader Russian espionage operation, has garnered significant attention.

Ms. Ivanova is accused of participating in operations that targeted US military resources in Germany and involved indistinguishable surveillance of two investigative journalists viewed as adversaries by the Russian government. The court has considered evidence suggesting that these journalists faced potential threats to their safety, including possible kidnapping or assassination.

For the first time on the stand, Ivanova proclaimed her innocence, stating that while she did follow certain individuals and traveled across Europe, she remained oblivious to the actual intent of these activities. "I thought we were doing journalism, trying to expose corruption," she told the jury, specifically referencing an effort centered around journalist Christo Grozev, which, she claims, was meant to reveal his alleged misconduct. However, she noted that no information regarding Grozev was ultimately published and claimed, "nothing actually happened."

In the courtroom, she detailed the dynamics of her relationship with Biser Dzhambazov, her partner of over a decade, asserting that she trusted him completely. Ivanova explained that Dzhambazov had convinced her to assist with the surveillance operations linked to a mutual friend, Orlin Roussev, who had financially supported them after their relocation to the UK in 2012.

Their entangled narrative grew even more complex when she recounted the moment of Dzhambazov's arrest, recalling her shock when police apprehended him and another suspect, Vanya Gaberova, while they were in bed together. In a poignant moment, Ivanova revealed her disbelief upon learning that Dzhambazov had reportedly fabricated a health crisis concerning a brain tumor to justify his activities.

As the trial proceeds, the courtroom remains engaged with Ivanova’s emotionally charged narrative and the broader implications surrounding allegations of espionage involving Russian operatives in the UK.
