Trump Describes 'Very Good' Call with Zelensky Amid Ongoing Conflict
US President discusses peace efforts and military support during hour-long conversation with Ukrainian leader.
US President Donald Trump has praised a recent phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling it a “very good” discussion that lasted around an hour. Sharing his thoughts on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the goal of aligning the requests and needs of both Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that efforts towards a ceasefire were progressing. Following the discussions, both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously shown interest in halting attacks on energy infrastructures, but each side soon accused the other of continuing assaults.
Despite Trump’s push for a broader truce, Putin rejected an immediate proposal for a 30-day ceasefire that was backed by the US and Ukraine in a separate conversation. Reflecting on recent developments, a prisoner swap between the two nations saw 175 POWs exchanged, with Zelensky indicating the significance of the operation, which included the return of 22 severely injured soldiers.
In detailing the conversation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Trump agreed to assist Ukraine in acquiring additional air defense systems in Europe. Technical teams are set to meet in Saudi Arabia soon to explore the possibility of extending the ceasefire to the Black Sea, a move that could be pivotal towards a potential resolution of the conflict.
Zelensky echoed Trump’s sentiments, declaring the call “positive,” “frank,” and “very substantive.” Both leaders acknowledged the necessity for continued collaboration to achieve a sustainable peace agreement. Following a two-hour phone call between Trump and Putin, both confirmed an agreement to cease attacks on energy infrastructures; however, Putin stipulated that a comprehensive ceasefire would require Ukraine’s allies to retract military aid, a condition previously dismissed by Ukrainian allies in Europe.
As military actions resumed, with claims from both Ukraine and Russia of attacks targeting critical infrastructure, tensions continue to run high in the region. The fractious nature of this ongoing conflict illustrates the challenges that lie ahead for diplomatic efforts.
