Tragic Assault on Medical Staff in Sudan's Famine-Struck Darfur

In yet another devastating incident amid the ongoing civil war in Sudan, paramilitaries from the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.) have attacked the last medical clinic in the Zamzam refugee camp, leading to the death of its entire staff. This assault, which took place in El Fasher — a city in the western Darfur region — has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 100 individuals, as stated by various aid organizations and the United Nations.

The Zamzam camp, housing approximately 500,000 displaced persons, has been under siege, and the attack on Friday evening marked a particularly violent episode. Following hours of shelling, armed paramilitaries breached the camp's defenses, subsequently destroying hundreds of homes and the primary market of the encamped residents. Witnesses and reports from Relief International, the organization overseeing the clinic, detailed a horrifying sequence of violence culminating in the deaths of nine healthcare workers, including the head doctor.

Kashif Shafique, the Sudan director for Relief International, shared in a phone interview the tragic news that their entire team — consisting of five medics and four drivers — were brutally executed. The organization expressed profound sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the critical role the clinic played in an area grappling with rampant violence and acute food shortages.

Prior to the attack, the paramilitary forces had issued warnings for the aid workers to evacuate, but the physicians felt compelled to remain and provide care for civilians injured by ongoing bombardments. Attempts to evacuate were complicated, as the main escape routes from the camp had been effectively sealed off amidst the rising tensions.
