Passing of 'Grandpa Robber' Following Kim Kardashian Heist Verdict
Didier Dubreucq, one of the participants in the infamous jewelry heist involving Kim Kardashian, has died due to lung cancer just a month after being convicted.
One of the notorious "grandpa robbers" involved in the robbery of reality TV star Kim Kardashian has passed away just a month after his conviction, as reported by French media. Didier Dubreucq, who was 69 years old, had been diagnosed with lung cancer before his trial and had been undergoing chemotherapy.
In May 2023, Dubreucq and seven accomplices were found guilty of the high-profile jewelry theft that occurred in Paris nearly a decade ago, resulting in millions of dollars worth of jewelry being stolen. Dubreucq denied his role in the crime, asserting, "It's a mistaken identity case... I had nothing to do with this," during his court testimony in April 2023.
Due to his medical condition, Dubreucq, often referred to as "Blue Eyes," did not attend the sentencing hearing. The court sentenced him to a total of seven years, five of which were suspended, and he did not serve additional time due to the two years he had already spent in pre-trial detention. Other members of the gang received sentences of up to eight years, mostly suspended, because of time served as well. Judge David De Pas stated that the health condition of the main defendants made incarceration ethically inappropriate.
Kardashian, who shared her harrowing experience during the trial, referred to the incident as "the most terrifying experience of my life," highlighting the emotional toll it took on her and her family. The gang, dubbed the "grandpa robbers" due to the ages of its members, infamously stole approximately $10 million (£7.5 million) in jewelry, including a $4 million (£3 million) engagement ring from her then-husband, rapper Kanye West.
The case, which attracted significant media attention, underscores the risks associated with celebrity life and has sparked discussions about crime, security, and preventive measures for public figures. With Dubreucq's death, an essential chapter of this high-profile case appears to conclude.
