Pope Francis Prioritizes Duties Over Health, Say Vatican Observers

Following a diagnosis of bronchitis that led to pneumonia, Pope Francis remains committed to his duties, regularly meeting with various groups and presiding over public Masses, a testament to his discipline and sense of vocation.

In the wake of the Vatican's announcement on February 6 regarding Pope Francis's bronchitis diagnosis, the pontiff continued to engage in numerous private audiences daily, meeting with groups of nuns, pilgrims, and leaders. This determination was evident when he conducted an outdoor Mass in St. Peter's Square on February 9, despite struggling with his health as strong winds blew off his zucchetto and he had to pause his homily due to breathing difficulties.

Even after needing an aide to read his speech during the following Wednesday audience, Pope Francis still made time to shake hands and take pictures with attendees. His continued activity ultimately resulted in a hospital visit, where doctors classified his condition as complex and it progressed to pneumonia affecting both lungs.

Those close to the Pope suggest that his profound sense of duty and the stringent work ethic instilled in him from an early age led to his overexertion. Currently bedridden after weeks of intense engagements, his health challenges coincide with the start of the 2025 Jubilee, a significant year in the Catholic Church focused on faith and forgiveness, which only occurs every twenty-five years.
