The recent sanctions on Antal Rogan highlight strained US-Hungary relations as the Biden administration comes to a close.
In an unusual move for NATO allies, the US Treasury has placed sanctions on Antal Rogan, a significant player in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz government and the head of his cabinet office. This decision comes at a peculiar time, with the Biden administration nearing its end and indicating a cooling relationship between Hungary and the United States, particularly following Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine over the past three years.
The sanctions report describes Rogan as a "primary architect, implementer and beneficiary of this system of corruption." Outgoing US Ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, stated that this action illustrates a fundamental misconception about sovereignty—asserting that it is not the US that jeopardizes Hungary's sovereignty, but rather the "kleptocratic ecosystem" Rogan has reportedly been a part of.
However, the sanctions have been met with backlash from Hungarian officials. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused Pressman of seeking personal vengeance, stating that the current US administration failed in its diplomatic efforts with Hungary and suggesting that the upcoming Trump presidency would reverse such stances. In agreement, former US ambassador to Hungary, David Cornstein, criticized the outgoing administration's approach as hostile.
With Donald Trump soon to assume the presidency, speculation arises about whether these sanctions will be lifted. Trump's perspective on Orban is far more favorable, viewing him as a political ally. Nevertheless, the situation is complicated due to Rogan's oversight of domestic intelligence services, raising concerns about Hungary’s reliability in safeguarding sensitive NATO information, especially given its ties with Russia.
Moreover, discontent within Fidesz towards Rogan's lifestyle and power remains prevalent, adding another layer of complexity to the political and social landscape in Hungary. As the US prepares for a shift in leadership, the direction of US-Hungarian relations and the future of Rogan’s sanctions remain uncertain.
