China Denounces 'Appeasement' in Trade Negotiations Amid US Tariff Pressures
A Chinese official criticizes nations yielding to US demands to limit trade with China as President Trump intensifies tariff negotiations with allies.
China has sharply criticized countries that it argues are yielding to the United States in trade negotiations while the Trump administration applies pressure to restrict commerce with Beijing. A spokesperson from China's commerce ministry voiced this discontent following reports that Washington is leveraging tariff negotiations to encourage foreign nations to limit their trading activities with China in exchange for exemptions from US import tariffs.
The Trump administration has initiated talks with various nations concerning tariffs, with a Japanese delegation recently visiting Washington and South Korea preparing to begin its negotiations shortly. Since taking office in January, President Trump has enforced significant tariffs on imports from China, while other countries are also facing a general US tariff of 10% until July.
"Appeasement cannot bring peace, and compromise cannot earn one respect," stated the spokesperson from the Chinese Commerce Ministry. They emphasized that all nations should advocate for fairness and uphold international economic standards along with the multilateral trading system.
Trump's aggressive tariff strategy has imposed duties of up to 145% on certain Chinese imports, with the potential for overall levies on specific Chinese goods to reach as high as 245% once new tariffs are combined with existing ones. The ongoing trade tensions not only reflect economic competition but also a broader struggle over global trading norms and alliances.
