**Greenland's Future in Its Own Hands, Danish PM Tells Trump**

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserts Greenland's right to self-determination amid US acquisition talks by Donald Trump.

During a significant phone conversation, Frederiksen made it clear that Greenland must dictate its own future, responding to Trump's recent indications of interest in purchasing the autonomous territory.

In a recent phone call, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen assured Donald Trump that the question of Greenland's future lies solely with its people. This comes after Trump triggered a diplomatic stir by expressing a desire to buy Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. In their 45-minute conversation, Frederiksen reinforced that Denmark respects Greenland's autonomy and echoed the sentiments of Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who firmly stated that Greenland is not for sale.

Trump’s earlier comments about wanting to acquire the island led Frederiksen to label the proposal "absurd" during an earlier confrontation in 2019, which resulted in an abrupt cancellation of his planned visit to Denmark. To underscore the importance of Greenland's autonomy, Frederiksen reiterated that "it is up to Greenland to decide its own future." She further strengthened her position by publicly stating Denmark's readiness to enhance security responsibilities in the Arctic.

Despite Frederiksen's assertion, Trump shared a poll on his social media account that suggested a significant portion of Greenlanders support independence from Denmark. This has ignited discussions around a potential referendum, which Denmark has indicated it would honor. Currently, Greenland's government is open to dialogue with the incoming Trump administration, even as concerns mount within Denmark regarding the potential economic implications of Trump's threats of tariffs if Greenland is not ceded.

Frederiksen has also organized a "crisis meeting" with business executives to address the potential fallout from these threats, particularly from the US, which is now Denmark’s second-largest export market. Her government prioritizes trade relations, highlighting contributions from Danish companies to the US economy.

Opinions within Denmark about Frederiksen's diplomatic stance differ. Supporters like Greenlandic MP Aaja Chemnitz appreciate her commitment to self-determination, while others, such as opposition MP Rasmus Jarlov, criticize her for what they see as disregarding Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland.

As the situation unfolds, analysts suggest Trump’s engagement with Frederiksen signifies that the matter is taken seriously by the US, reflecting an ongoing geopolitical interest in Greenland's resources and strategic position. The dialogue between Greenland and the US might lead to intensified discussions on defense, indicating a complex interplay of interests in the Arctic region.
