Authorities utilize facial recognition and mobile data to locate suspect in fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare's CEO Brian Thompson.
Police efforts in New York City are ramping up to apprehend the killer of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was tragically shot outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The incident occurred early on a Wednesday morning, just minutes after the suspect was captured on surveillance at a nearby Starbucks.
The attack, which took place around 6:45 AM EST, was premeditated, according to investigators. Witnesses report that Thompson was shot in the back and leg, and he later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The attacker fled without stealing any of Thompson's belongings, leading detectives to believe that this killing was specifically targeted.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed that the assailant, dressed in a black face mask and light-colored jacket, attempted to flee after the shooting. Despite his weapon jamming mid-attack, the suspect managed to fix it quickly and continue firing. Evidence suggests that a suppressor was used on the gun, complicating the sound of the gunfire in the bustling Manhattan area.
Police are currently leveraging a combination of facial recognition technology and forensic analysis to piece together the events surrounding the crime. Surveillance footage from Starbucks shows the suspect with a mask that exposes his eyes and part of his nose, which investigators hope to use to identify him. Additionally, three bullet casings discovered at the scene are being tested for DNA evidence. Disturbing words such as "deny," "defend," and "depose" were found inscribed on the casings, potentially pointing to a deeper motive.
A mobile phone was located nearby, further enhancing the investigation, while detectives are also looking into Thompson's room at a Marriott hotel nearby. Despite Thompson's successful career, which he transitioned to CEO only two years ago, no clear motive for the shooting has been established.
Thompson's wife revealed that he had recently received threats, although she could not provide specifics. Law enforcement acknowledged a previous suspicious incident at the family home in Minnesota but found no evidence of criminal activity at that time. As authorities continue to sift through the mounting evidence, the search for the person responsible for this shocking assassination remains a top priority.
