Mel Gibson's Malibu Home Lost to Devastating LA Wildfires
Mel Gibson recounts the destruction of his Malibu residence amid ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, criticizing state leaders for inadequate response.
Mel Gibson has revealed that his Malibu home has been destroyed in the recent wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles while he was away in Austin, Texas, recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. The Oscar-winning actor described his property as "completely toasted" and voiced his frustration with California Governor Gavin Newsom, criticizing the state’s handling of the crisis. The ferocious fires have claimed the lives of at least 10 victims and resulted in thousands of structures being obliterated, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.
Gibson expressed a sense of unease during his podcast visit, knowing that his neighborhood was engulfed in flames. "It's kind of devastating, it's emotional,” he shared in an interview with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports. He noted that he had lived in his Malibu property for some 15 years and lamented the destruction of homes belonging to some of his neighbors, including fellow actor Ed Harris. Gibson confirmed that, following evacuation orders, his family is safe despite the loss.
During the podcast with Rogan, the actor went on to critique Governor Newsom’s assurances about forest management, questioning where state tax dollars have been allocated. He remarked, "I think all our tax dollars probably went for Gavin's hair gel," expressing his opinion on state leadership.
The wildfires currently burning across the Los Angeles area have now decimated around 31,000 acres of land and have led to the evacuation of approximately 180,000 people. With five major fire fronts still active, residents await further updates on the situation. California’s fire chief mentioned that up to 10,000 structures could be lost, and further high winds predicted could exacerbate the ongoing crisis.
Republican President-elect Donald Trump called for Newsom's resignation over his management of the wildfires, suggesting that "one of the best and most beautiful" regions in the U.S. is suffering during this disaster. Newsom has defended his response, asserting that state authorities are utilizing all available resources to protect communities. A spokeswoman also criticized Trump for politicizing the tragedy, reiterating a commitment to safeguarding residents.
The devastation is not limited to everyday citizens, as numerous celebrities have also reported losses. Paris Hilton shared heart-wrenching footage of her property’s remains and described her loss as "truly indescribable." Other famous individuals, including Billy Crystal and Ricki Lake, expressed their sorrow over losing homes they cherished for decades or even their "dream home."
Celebrities like Sir Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman, and Anna Faris are among those affected as well, highlighting the broad impact of the wildfires. Actor Steve Guttenberg took a proactive stance by helping to move cars for fire engines, emphasizing the urgency of the evacuation. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly opened their home to friends and family displaced by the chaos, promoting community support during this harrowing time.
As California faces what is being called the most extensive and devastating wildfire crisis in state history, federal resources have been pledged by U.S. President Joe Biden to assist in recovery efforts.
