Hadi Matar Sentenced for Stabbing Salman Rushdie: A 25-Year Verdict

Hadi Matar, convicted of stabbing Salman Rushdie, has received a 25-year prison sentence following an attack that left the renowned author partially blind and injured.

Hadi Matar, 27, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of British-Indian author Sir Salman Rushdie during a lecture in New York. The attack, which occurred in August 2022, left Rushdie with significant injuries, including blindness in one eye and damage to his liver and arm. Matar was found guilty earlier this year of attempted murder and assault, leading to the maximum sentence handed down by Judge David Foley.

During the assault, Matar stabbed Rushdie 15 times in various parts of his body, an action prosecutors argued was intentional and deliberate. Matar was also convicted of assaulting Henry Reese, the interviewer present at the event, and received an additional seven-year sentence to run concurrently with his primary sentence. Matar's defense claimed that there was no proof he intended to kill Rushdie, maintaining his pleas of not guilty throughout the trial.

Matar, who did not testify in his defense, made a statement calling Rushdie a "hypocrite" and voiced his disdain for Rushdie's portrayal of Islam, citing support for a past fatwa against the author issued by Iran’s Supreme Leader. Although long under threat, Rushdie had felt reassured recently about his safety, believing the dangers had lessened.
