Israel's Airstrike Hits Displaced Gazan Camps Amid Ongoing Conflict

Israel's latest bombardment of the Mawasi area, sheltering many displaced Palestinians, has resulted in several deaths, including children, according to Gaza's emergency services. This attack signifies a continuation of violence that has plagued the region since the conflict began in October 2023.

On Thursday, the Israeli military targeted the southern coastal area of Mawasi, which had become a temporary haven for tens of thousands of individuals fleeing violence. The Civil Defense emergency rescue service reported that the attack led to an overnight toll that claimed the lives of more than 20 people, although Palestinian officials have not differentiated between combatants and civilians in their assessments. Witnesses reported seeing flames engulfing some of the makeshift tents set up at the humanitarian zone, as rescue workers scrambled to extinguish the fire and transport the injured and deceased.

Despite the designation of Mawasi as a "humanitarian zone" by the Israeli military, the area has been subject to bombardment. Since the beginning of hostilities, Israel has repeatedly directed Gazans towards this region in a bid to provide safety, only occasionally to strike there, citing militant activity.
