The couple filed for divorce on May 23, 2023, announcing their separation publicly in September, shortly after attending the Met Gala together. In her statement, the 69-year-old Furness admitted that the emotional pain she feels is profound. However, she expressed her faith in a higher power, stating, "I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe... is always working FOR us."

Furness reflected on the knowledge and wisdom she has gained from what she described as the "breakdown" of her marriage to the 56-year-old actor, who is best known for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men series. She shared that life's hardships often serve as a path to rediscovery, saying, "Sometimes the universe has to create arduous circumstances for us to walk through in order to find our way home."
