Georges Blanc: World's Oldest Michelin-starred Restaurant Loses Third Star
The iconic French eatery wraps up a historic era as it adjusts to a new two-star rating.
The acclaimed restaurant Georges Blanc, noted as the oldest Michelin-starred establishment worldwide, is reportedly losing its third star, according to recent French media announcements. The venerable 82-year-old chef, Georges Blanc, expressed surprise at the decision in an interview with the AFP news agency. "We're not expecting it," he remarked, adding, "We'll make do with the two stars... maybe we'll be less elitist and a little more accessible."
Nestled in Vonnas, a quaint town near Lyon, France, Georges Blanc has a rich history dating back to 1929 when it first received a star under the management of Blanc's grandmother, Élisa Blanc. Since then, the restaurant has maintained at least one Michelin star, showcasing its commitment to excellence in French cuisine.
Georges Blanc, who assumed control of the restaurant in 1964, quickly established it as a culinary landmark in the region, earning a third Michelin star in 1981. This latest development marks the first time in over four decades that the restaurant has dipped below its prestigious three-star status. Remarkably, Chef Blanc has spent more of his life with Michelin's highest rating than without it.
Gwendal Poullenec, the Michelin Guide director, commented on the decision, stating that they aim to "reflect the evolution of the quality of the restaurant in our rankings." He highlighted Blanc's vital role in transforming the restaurant from a family-run inn into a must-visit gourmet destination. "We will continue to follow this restaurant with the same kindness, the same rigor," Poullenec affirmed.
Aside from his flagship restaurant, Georges Blanc oversees a collection of other dining ventures, hotels, and food establishments, contributing to France's culinary tapestry. The Michelin Guide, originating from a French tire company, has been appraising restaurants since 1900 and introduced its star system in 1926. The annual Michelin star awards ceremony is scheduled to take place later this month.
