Israel Claims Elimination of Senior Iranian Commander Linked to Hamas Attack
Israel Defense Forces report the death of Saeed Izadi, an Iranian military commander implicated in the planning of the October 7 Hamas attacks, during recent strikes in Qom, Iran.
Israel has declared the assassination of Saeed Izadi, a senior Iranian military commander believed to have played a pivotal role in the October 7, 2023 Hamas assault on southern Israel. The strike took place in Qom, Iran, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) characterizing Izadi as an "orchestrator" of the violent incident that resulted in around 1,200 Israeli fatalities and numerous hostages being taken to Gaza. IDF Chief Eyal Zamir referred to the killing as "the blood of thousands of Israelis is on his hands," framing it as both a significant intelligence and operational milestone.
Although Iran has yet to confirm Izadi's death, it has a history of denying its involvement with Hamas. The IDF's report details that the operation targeted an apartment in Qom, where Izadi was leading the Palestine Corps of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, charged with managing relations with militant Palestinian factions. Sources indicate that Izadi was integral not only in arming and financing Hamas but was also responsible for coordinating military strategies between high-ranking IRGC officials and Hamas leaders.
In a later development, the IDF also claimed the targeting of Behnam Shahriyari, another Quds Force commander involved in transferring weapons to various proxy groups in the region, including Hamas. Should the IDF's claims be substantiated, the eliminations of both Izadi and Shahriyari could be seen as a severe setback for the IRGC.
The backdrop of this escalation is the ongoing conflict, now entering its ninth day, with both Iran and Israel exchanging military strikes. Reports indicate that Iran accused Israel of targeting a nuclear facility near Isfahan, while Israel confirmed its attacks aimed at military infrastructure across southwestern Iran, with drone incursions reported.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of severe consequences should the U.S. become involved in the conflict, emphasizing that negotiations on Iran's nuclear program would not resume until Israeli strikes ceased. Moreover, former President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of U.S. military action, suggesting that Iran has limited time to engage in negotiations regarding its nuclear activities.
Since the conflict's beginning on June 13, Iranian officials report at least 430 casualties among military leaders and over 3,500 injuries. Meanwhile, independent monitoring by the Human Rights Activists News Agency estimates at least 657 deaths in Iran, while Israel has reported 25 casualties, including one due to a heart issue.
