Musk, Rubio, and Polish Minister Clash Over Starlink's Role in Ukraine

In a recent series of posts on X, tensions flared between Elon Musk, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski over the operation of the Starlink satellite system in Ukraine. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, claimed that Starlink forms the "backbone of the Ukrainian army," asserting that the Ukrainian front lines would collapse without it. This provocative statement set off a chain reaction of responses.

Sikorski responded quickly, emphasizing that Poland funds the Starlink service for Ukraine through the Digitization Ministry at an annual cost of approximately $50 million. He criticized Musk's potential threat to disable the service, framing it as unethical and suggesting that Poland would be obliged to seek alternative providers if SpaceX could not be trusted to deliver reliable service.

Rubio entered the conversation, rejecting Sikorski's assertions, stating, "No-one has made any threats about cutting Ukraine off from Starlink." He underscored the importance of the Starlink system in fortifying Ukraine against aggression, implying that without it, the situation would have been dire for both Ukraine and neighboring Poland.

In a dismissive retort to Sikorski, Musk accused him of being a "small man" and downplayed Poland's financial contribution as a "tiny fraction" of the overall costs associated with Starlink. He reiterated that there is no alternative to the service provided by SpaceX.

The exchanges underscore the critical role of Starlink in Ukraine's military operations since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
