Pakistan Warns of Imminent Indian Military Action Amidst Heightened Tensions
Pakistan's government claims credible intelligence suggesting that India plans a military strike in response to recent violence in Kashmir.
Pakistan's information minister, Attaullah Tarar, has reported "credible intelligence" indicating that India plans to launch a military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours. This statement follows a recent deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists, an incident for which India has blamed Pakistan, accusing it of supporting the militants involved in the attack.
Tarar asserts that India aims to use this attack as a "false pretext" for its military action. He warned that any such "military adventurism" would be met with a strong and assured response from Pakistan, reiterating the country's readiness to defend itself. In the aftermath of the attack, which authorities have noted is the deadliest violence against civilians in two decades in the disputed region, both nations have seen a surge in troop movements and reports of skirmishes along the Line of Control.
Recent speculation has centered on India’s potential military response, recalling previous military operations in response to militant attacks in 2016 and 2019. Indian authorities, in a bid to address security concerns, have intensified their actions against suspected militants in the Kashmir region, reportedly detaining over 1,500 individuals for questioning and demolishing multiple homes linked to alleged militants.
The Kashmir dispute has been a longstanding point of contention between India and Pakistan since their partition in 1947. The region, claimed in full by both nations but administered only in parts, has been rife with conflict fueled by a decades-long insurgency against Indian rule.
Following the Pahalgam attack, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to “hunt” the attackers, promising that they "will be punished beyond their imagination." Meanwhile, the identities of the attackers remain partially obscured, with Indian police naming two Pakistani nationals and one local man while a little-known group initially claimed responsibility but later denied involvement.
As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, fearing further escalation in an already volatile region where both countries possess nuclear capabilities.
