Rapper Tory Lanez has been hospitalized following a stabbing incident in a California prison, according to state corrections officials. The Canadian hip-hop artist, known legally as Daystar Peterson, was attacked early Tuesday morning while in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution located in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles (120 km) north of Los Angeles.
Officials reported that prison staff responded to the incident, activated 911, and provided medical assistance before Lanez, 31, was transferred to a local medical facility for further care. Pedro Calderón Michel from the state’s corrections department confirmed that an investigation into the stabbing is currently underway. Although there has not been any official update on Lanez's condition, various media outlets suggest that his injuries are not life-threatening.
Tory Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for his role in the shooting of fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion at a party in 2020. The incident occurred as Lanez and Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, left a pool party hosted by reality star Kylie Jenner, where a heated argument reportedly ensued. During the trial that followed, Megan Thee Stallion testified that she had demanded to exit the vehicle they were in. It was then that Lanez began firing shots into the ground, allegedly instructing her to "dance." The shooting caused Megan to undergo surgery for bullet fragments lodged in her foot.
Despite being found guilty on three felony gun-related charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, Lanez has consistently maintained his innocence, refusing to apologize for the incident. The trial generated significant attention within the music community, leading to public divisions among artists. Some prominent figures, such as 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, expressed support for Lanez and requested leniency in sentencing.
Before his conviction, Lanez had an impressive career with seven top 10 albums in the U.S. across seven years. He has hinted at the release of a new album titled "Peterson" while incarcerated, further emphasizing his intent to remain relevant in the music industry despite his ongoing legal issues.
