In an alarming escalation of violence across Ukraine, a series of Russian aerial strikes have resulted in at least eight deaths and over 30 injuries. The toll was confirmed by regional officials following overnight attacks that have raised concerns over civilian safety amid ongoing hostilities.
The western Khmelnytskyi region has reported four fatalities, while the Kyiv region accounted for three additional deaths and the southern city of Mykolaiv registered one. These developments come following one of the most intense assaults on Kyiv since the initial invasion in February 2022, during which Russia has managed to occupy around 20% of Ukraine's territory, including the annexed Crimea region.
In response to a spike in drone attacks targeting Russia, the Russian defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones over several of its regions, including Moscow, on the night of May 24. Remarkably, no casualties were reported on the Russian side, despite the brief suspension of flights at Moscow airports due to the drone threat.
Kyiv's local officials have indicated that the latest strikes inflicted significant damage, including injuries to at least 11 individuals and multiple residential buildings, which resulted in the need for residents to seek refuge in the city’s metro system during the attacks. Mykolaiv’s emergency services also reported retrieving the remains of an elderly man from a building ravaged by a drone strike, with five others injured.
In Kharkiv, authorities reported three individuals sustaining injuries in relation to the drone attacks, as the conflict persists to impact both sides amid the continuous struggle for dominance in the region. The situation remains tense with ongoing military engagements, leaving peace in Ukraine seemingly distant.
