**Major Music Festival Exits Serbia Amid Pressure from Authorities Supporting Student Protests**

**The Exit festival, one of Europe's largest music festivals, will relocate following governmental pressure related to its support of student-led protests against corruption.**

**As the festival prepares for its 25th anniversary, organisers assert that state influences have constrained its operations, leading to a significant decision to exit the Serbian cultural landscape.**

In a striking move, the Exit festival, renowned as one of Europe's premier music events, has announced its exit from Serbia, attributing the decision to what they describe as "undemocratic pressures" from local authorities. This year's celebration, scheduled for July 10-13, 2024, will mark the festival's final appearance in Novi Sad, the site of the renowned Petrovaradin Fortress.

Organisers claim that government funding for the festival has been withdrawn, and several sponsors have faced state pressure to cut ties with the event due to its alignment with the student-led anti-corruption protests unfolding throughout Serbia. In response, provincial officials have rejected these claims, asserting that their inability to support the festival is purely a result of financial constraints.

The Exit festival has deep historical roots, originating from the pro-democracy protests that contributed to the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. Reflecting this tradition, the festival has used each year to focus on various social causes, spanning themes from human rights to LGBTQ+ advocacy. Following a tragic incident at the Novi Sad railway station last November, where 16 people lost their lives due to a structural failure, students propelled protests demanding accountability and reform.

The festival's founders have publicly expressed that their commitment to the protesters has come at a considerable financial cost but emphasized that the values of freedom and solidarity outweigh these challenges. "Freedom has no price," said founder Dusan Kovacevic, urging the public to remember the festival for its message of unity and cultural expression.

While the future of the festival remains uncertain, discussions regarding relocation to another country are already underway, with potential venues yet to be announced. The Exit festival has previously hosted iconic performances from major acts like The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, and The Cure, drawing over 200,000 attendees last year alone.

Local music industry figures, such as Daryl Fidelak of a Belgrade-based record label, underscore the importance of Exit in transforming perceptions of Serbia and fostering a vibrant creative scene that has resulted in numerous subsequent cultural events. The festival’s impact on both national and international stages remains significant, with many in the community lamenting its departure.

As protests continue to stir political discourse in Serbia, the Exit festival's exit may represent a broader narrative about the intersection of culture, politics, and civil activism in the region.
