Ukrainian President Zelensky announces the capture of two wounded North Korean soldiers during a military operation in Russia's Kursk Oblast.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that Ukrainian troops have captured two North Korean soldiers who were injured in combat, specifically in Russia's Kursk Oblast. The soldiers are reportedly receiving essential medical treatment and are currently in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv. Zelensky expressed his gratitude towards the Ukrainian paratroopers and Special Operation Forces, calling their mission to capture the North Koreans a challenging endeavor.
According to Zelensky, wounded North Korean soldiers are typically executed by their comrades in a bid to eliminate evidence of North Korea's participation in the ongoing war against Ukraine. Accompanying his statement, Zelensky shared images of the soldiers; however, verification of their identities as North Koreans was not disclosed. One of the images displayed a Russian army identification card belonging to a soldier from Tyva, a region that borders Mongolia. This raised suspicions that Russia might be concealing North Korean fighters by issuing them false identities to avoid detection.
In a related context, South Korea’s intelligence agency indicated in December that a North Korean soldier, the first reported capture while aiding Russia in its conflict, succumbed to injuries after being taken by Ukrainian forces. The White House has further reported that North Korean troops are facing significant casualties as the war continues to unfold.
As tensions rise, the government in Ukraine aims to expose the extent of North Korea's involvement in the conflict and has pledged to provide journalists access to the captured soldiers to further illuminate the situation. The unfolding dynamics between Ukraine and North Korea illustrate the complex geopolitical landscape of the ongoing war.
