Widespread Power Outage in Spain and Portugal Finally Resolved
After nearly 18 hours of darkness, power is largely restored across Spain and Portugal following a significant outage that affected essential services.
Spain's national electricity supplier, Red Eléctrica, reported early Tuesday that power restoration was nearly complete for the majority of Peninsular Spain, marking the end of a major outage that persisted for nearly 18 hours. The blackout, which began on Monday evening, disrupted various critical services including airports, train operations, and traffic signals, leaving millions stranded on the Iberian Peninsula.
By 6 a.m. local time, the company stated that 99 percent of electricity demand was being fulfilled, with all substations now reactivated. The situation across the border in Portugal was improving as well, with REN, the country’s electricity and gas supplier, reporting the restoration of 85 out of 89 substations by late Monday. However, some regions in Portugal remained without power.
The reason behind this widespread power failure has yet to be identified. Authorities have assured the public that so far, there are no indications of malicious acts like a cyberattack being behind the outage. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the blackout, as residents and officials alike remain vigilant and concerned about potential future incidents.
