Major Drone Assault Hits Kharkiv Amid Ongoing Conflict
Heightened tensions in Ukraine as a significant drone strike by Russia results in casualties and destruction in Kharkiv.
In the most extensive drone assault to date on Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, at least two individuals have lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries, according to the city's mayor, Ihor Terekhov. The aggressive operation saw Russia launch an unprecedented 48 drones, in addition to two missiles and four gliding bombs overnight. Terekhov reported extensive damage, with three high-rise residential buildings sustaining significant impacts and visible devastation, as flames erupted from one of them.
The latest assault in Kharkiv follows a perilous night across Ukraine, where six deaths and approximately 80 injuries were recorded due to a massive barrage involving more than 400 drones and nearly 40 missiles. This wave of attacks comes in the wake of Ukraine's bold Operation Spider Web, an initiative that successfully targeted Russian strategic warplanes at four air bases deep within Russian territory just days prior. Reports indicate that Ukraine employed an innovative strategy using drones smuggled into Russia, where they were concealed in wooden cabins on lorries driven to the vicinity of the air bases, launching them remotely to orchestrate a surprise attack.
The escalation of drone warfare highlights a troubling development in the ongoing conflict, where Russian President Vladimir Putin initially commenced a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As tensions remain high, both sides appear to be bolstering their capabilities in this prolonged struggle.
