After the Central Electoral Bureau's decision to disqualify Calin Georgescu, supporters clash with police, igniting tensions over the controversial ruling amid allegations of foreign influence.
Romanian far-right populist Calin Georgescu has been disqualified from May's presidential election rerun, leading to clashes between his supporters and police in the capital, Bucharest. The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) announced that Georgescu “doesn't meet the conditions of legality”, citing his violation of democratic principles. This decision comes after the Romanian constitutional court annulled last November's first round of voting, in which Georgescu had gained significant support, due to intelligence revealing Russia's backing through numerous TikTok accounts.
In response to the ruling, Georgescu characterized it as a "direct blow" to democracy and has vowed to appeal within 24 hours. The unrest escalated outside BEC headquarters as thousands gathered to protest, resulting in confrontations with riot police. Tear gas was deployed, and reports of vandalism surfaced as violence broke out, leading to the detention of at least four individuals.
Previously, on February 26, Georgescu was arrested while trying to register as a candidate, an event that sparked significant public outcry and protests across Romania. He faces serious charges, including an alleged attempt to undermine the constitutional order and connections with neo-fascist groups, which he vehemently denies.
Georgescu's rise in popularity, often surprising political analysts, can be attributed to his strong nationalist rhetoric promising to "restore Romania's dignity" and challenge its ties to NATO and the European Union. His earlier statements indicated a potential cessation of support for Ukraine if elected, further complicating his international relations.
The political landscape grows more complex as US Vice-President JD Vance criticized the annulment of the elections as based on "flimsy suspicions", indicating support for Georgescu from certain factions within the Trump administration. Additionally, Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu accused Elon Musk of interfering in Romanian electoral matters after Musk's public endorsements for Georgescu stirred further debate.
As the political fabric of Romania continues to be tested by allegations of foreign influence and domestic discontent, the upcoming election rerun promises to be a critical junction for the country's democratic integrity.
