Fire at Heathrow Power Substation Leaves Thousands Without Electricity
A blaze at an electrical substation disrupts power supply for Heathrow Airport and homes in London, with the cause still under investigation.
In the early hours of March 21, 2025, a fire erupted at the North Hyde electrical substation, approximately two miles from Heathrow Airport, causing extensive power outages across the area. The blaze rendered over 16,000 homes without electricity, as confirmed by Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks. The London Fire Brigade reported that, more than five hours post-incident, they were still working to suppress the flames, with half of a transformer still ablaze.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne of the London Fire Brigade stated that the event would likely be a prolonged incident, and he urged the public to avoid the vicinity as disruptions were expected to escalate throughout the morning. In response to the emergency, approximately 70 firefighters were deployed to the scene, while efforts to contain the fire resulted in the evacuation of around 150 residents, coupled with a 650-foot safety cordon around the substation.
As of dawn, thick smoke could be seen rising from the site, and the fire brigade confirmed that investigations regarding the cause of the fire were still ongoing. Local authorities are actively monitoring the situation and providing updates to affected residents as they work to restore power and ensure public safety.
