Rising Anti-Ukrainian Sentiment in Poland Among Refugees Amid Electoral Tensions

A growing number of Ukrainian refugees in Poland report experiencing xenophobia and bullying, coinciding with a divisive presidential election campaign.

As Poland gears up for a heated presidential election, anti-Ukrainian sentiment is reportedly on the rise among the 2.5 million Ukrainian refugees in the country. Many Ukrainians describe increased bullying in schools and public settings, particularly since the onset of the election campaign. Activists and reports highlight the impact of misinformation and propaganda on public attitudes, complicating the situation for a community already grappling with the trauma of war.

Ukrainian refugees in Poland are expressing significant concerns over escalating xenophobia and bullying as they navigate daily life in the country. Notably, Svitlana, a Ukrainian mother, has witnessed her daughter experience bullying in school, including being told to "go back to Ukraine." This marked a stark contrast to her daughter's earlier positive schooling experience, underscoring a troubling shift in social attitudes towards Ukrainians.

With at least 2.5 million Ukrainians now residing in Poland, representing nearly 7% of the total population, the inflow of refugees since the beginning of the war has drawn both support and growing tension. Notable incidents of abuse include verbal assaults on public transport and derogatory remarks in public spaces, with many experiencing widespread hostility that aligns with a divisive presidential election campaign currently underway.

As the elections approach, anti-Ukrainian sentiment has been fueled by political rhetoric. Activist Natalia Panchenko, leading the 'Stand with Ukraine' Foundation, noted a surge in both online harassment and real-life abuse directed at Ukrainian refugees. Despite initial compassion from Polish citizens at the onset of the conflict, recent months have shown a marked change in public opinion, with latest polls indicating a decline in support for Ukrainian refugees.

Candidates in the election reflect varying degrees of support towards Ukrainians, with the political landscape becoming increasingly polarized. Far-right candidates espouse strong anti-Ukrainian positions, while centrist candidates attempt to balance public sentiment by downplaying previously supportive stances. Additionally, there are claims of misinformation campaigns aimed at vilifying Ukrainian refugees, often propagated through social media.

Research has indicated that public support for accepting Ukrainian refugees has dwindled, dropping to 50% in recent polls, a significant decrease from 81% just two years prior. This trend is believed to be exacerbated by persistent propaganda suggesting that Ukrainians exploit Polish resources and contribute negatively to society.

The intertwining of political narratives, public sentiment, and the genuine struggles faced by Ukrainian refugees underscores the complexity of the current social atmosphere in Poland. As the ongoing war continues to displace millions, the responses of host countries like Poland will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future experiences and integration of these refugees.
