As the Taliban's harsh regime tightens its grip on Afghanistan, countless Afghans risk their lives to migrate through treacherous routes to the UK. The journey for many Afghan migrants has evolved into a desperate struggle for survival, combining physical danger with profound psychological tolls. One such migrant, identified as Azaan, recounts harrowing experiences as he attempts to navigate the treacherous route from Afghanistan to Europe, aiming for a new life in the UK.

Azaan recalls the painful attempt to leap from a 20ft wall into a trench below—a common practice among those fleeing Afghanistan, where intensified crackdowns on illegal migration are making these journeys increasingly perilous. The wall, stretching nearly 300km along the Turkish-Iranian border, serves as a grim reminder of the extreme lengths individuals are willing to go to escape oppression and instability back home. "I was in severe pain," Azaan shares, recounting his injury from his first attempt at crossing. Deprived of food and shelter during his journey, he describes how he could only manage one boiled egg in the morning and a cup of rice at night, all while paid smugglers demanded almost $4,000 for the passage.

The context of this desperation is rooted in the drastic changes to life in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. With their repressive regime imposing severe restrictions, particularly against women and those associated with previous governments, many find themselves in dire situations. Azaan, who once led a dignified existence as a military officer, laments, "The people I fought against for 20 years are now in power... I’ll continue to try to leave even if it costs me my life."

Safety is a fleeting certainty on such treacherous paths; migrants face violence not only from smugglers but also from border enforcement. Testimony from a smuggler illustrates the brutal reality of the crossing—where Iranian police are reported to shoot at Afghans attempting to migrate. Despite the associated risks, including potential imprisonment or death, many Afghans feel there is no alternative but to leave their homeland.

In a poignant reminder of the lives lost during these treks, an elderly father mourns his son, Javid, a former soldier who perished in an attempt to reach the UK. The father feels an overwhelming sense of betrayal by the countries that once fought alongside Afghans against terrorism, stating, "If we had known we would be betrayed and abandoned, no one would have agreed to join hands."

The journey often leads to perilous sea crossings, with many Afghans risking their lives in small boats to navigate across treacherous waters to reach safety. One survivor, Shahida, recalls her harrowing experience crossing the English Channel packed with 64 other individuals, fearing for her life amid high-stakes peril. The chilling statistic of over 50 migrant deaths this year in perilous crossings reflects the dire circumstances many face in pursuit of safety and hope.
