In Tanzania's capital, a heart-wrenching situation unfolds as Emmanuel awaits news of his mother, who remains trapped beneath the wreckage of a collapsed building. The incident occurred in the bustling Kariakoo market area on a Saturday morning, and as rescue operations progress, 86 people have been retrieved alive, though 16 have tragically lost their lives, according to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa.

Emmanuel shared with the BBC that his mother was inside the building attending to customers when it fell. "She called me... two hours later, I was informed that the building had collapsed," he recounted. His hope remains undiminished as rescue teams continue to communicate with those trapped. "Looking at the efforts being done, we have hope that she will come up alive, we do leave that to God," he said.

The scale of the rescue operation has intensified as responders work through the debris, supplying water, glucose, and oxygen to those in need. While the exact number of individuals still trapped remains uncertain, the urgency of the mission is palpable. The Prime Minister assured that rescue activities would proceed around the clock until every possible survivor is found. He mentioned that five of the rescued individuals are currently under medical observation in a hospital.

Following the rescue efforts, an investigation into the collapse will take place to determine its causes. Authorities are attempting to locate the building's owner for crucial information on the structure's safety. During a memorial ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Prime Minister Majaliwa addressed mourners who gathered to pay tribute to the victims and collect the bodies of their loved ones.

The Prime Minister confirmed that following the building's collapse around 09:00 local time, first responders, including hundreds of volunteers, worked diligently, initially using only sledgehammers and their bare hands before heavy machinery was brought in.

In response to this tragedy, a dedicated task force of 19 individuals has been established to evaluate structural safety across the city. Their mission is to prevent such disasters in the future by assessing existing buildings and recommending necessary safety measures.

As the recovery efforts continue, the affected community remains hopeful, but the tragedy is a stark reminder of the importance of structural integrity in urban development.
