LA 2028 Olympics to Introduce Air Taxi Service for Attendees
The LA28 committee partners with Archer Aviation to provide a futuristic air taxi service, aiming to ease transportation during the upcoming Olympic Games.
As the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games approach, organizers are envisioning a novel transportation solution for spectators: an air taxi service. The LA28 committee has partnered with Archer Aviation to potentially offer this flying service during both the Olympic and Paralympic events. Announced on Thursday, the proposal aims to alleviate the city's notoriously congested traffic by allowing fans to fly to and from key venues.
The envisioned service would leverage a fleet of aircraft capable of transporting up to four passengers on flights lasting between 10 to 20 minutes. Yet, it's important to note that the plan hinges on Archer's ability to secure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification, which the company is actively pursuing. CEO Adam Goldstein expressed optimism for obtaining the necessary Type Certification, a vital sign of compliance with design and safety standards, later this year.
Despite previous setbacks, such as the failure of similar flying taxi initiatives in Paris for the 2024 Games, Archer Aviation remains committed to making air travel a reality in Los Angeles. Ticket prices are expected to be comparable to high-end rideshare services like Uber, and reservations could be made through a mobile app.
The aircraft, part of the eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) category, is designed to be quieter and more environmentally friendly than traditional helicopters. Backed by aerospace giants Boeing and United Airlines, Archer aims to redefine urban transport through this initiative, especially during the global spotlight of the Olympics.
The broader context of air taxi implementation includes significant challenges, notably regulatory hurdles and the need for substantial investment. Globally, there are aspirations for urban flying taxis to revolutionize transport, with some governments forecasting their introduction by the mid-2020s.
This bold transportation initiative is one of several measures being taken for the LA28 Games, which have a historical precedent in the city, as Los Angeles previously hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. In line with the event's sustainability goals, the Games will also see a restriction on car usage in a bid to enhance public transportation alternatives in the area.
